Johnson Hagood Stadium

Johnson Hagood Stadium has been the home of Citadel football since 1948. Viewed by many coaches as the best atmosphere in the Southern Conference, Hagood Stadium has a current capacity of 11,427.

The facility is named for the former Brigadier General and later governor of South Carolina. Hagood graduated from The Citadel in 1847.

The 2020 season marks the 73rd season of Citadel football inside JHS. The Bulldogs hold a 234-151-3 all-time record inside the facility.

The Bulldogs have posted 43 winning seasons, including going undefeated in 1959, 1978, 1980, 1981 and 1988. The Citadel put together a streak of 16-straight victories inside its home stadium from 1980-82.

Construction on Johnson Hagood Stadium began in 1946 and was completed in 1948. The stadium was originally completed with a capacity of 22,343.

The first game inside the stadium took place on Oct. 16, 1948 when the Bulldogs took on Davidson.  The Wildcats defeated The Citadel, 14-6.

The stadium was officially dedicated on Dec. 4, 1948 when the Bulldogs played host to Clemson in front of a then-stadium record estimated crowd of 16,000.

The Bulldogs earned their first victory inside their new stadium in the 1949 home opener against Newberry, defeating the Wolves 14-12. The Citadel would finish the season with a 3-2 mark for their first winning season inside JHS.

The Citadel set an attendance record on Oct. 11, 1969 when 21,460 fans came to watch the Bulldogs face William & Mary. That mark only lasted for two weeks as 21,573 came through the turnstiles on Oct. 25, 1969 to see the Bulldogs defeat Davidson, 34-28. The game against the Wildcats still ranks as the fourth largest crowd in stadium history.

The most successful stretch came from 1974-82 when the Bulldogs posted nine-straight winning seasons. The Citadel went 38-11 over that span, including posting three of the five undefeated home seasons at JHS.

In 1988, the Bulldogs played host to the No. 1 team in the nation when Marshall came to town. The Citadel responded by handing the Thundering Herd a 20-3 defeat in front of 20,011 fans.

The Bulldogs and Thundering Herd would go on to set a stadium attendance record in 1992 as 23,025 fans were in attendance to see No. 2 The Citadel face No. 3 Marshall.

The 1992 season was a special one in Bulldog history as The Citadel was ranked No. 1 in then-Division I-AA. The Bulldogs went 10-1 in capturing the Southern Conference championship. The Citadel would host its first playoff game on Nov. 28, 1992, defeating North Carolina A&T, 44-0.

Hagood Stadium has been the site for many great victories over ranked opponents, including a 13-10 victory over No. 9 Appalachian State in 1991, a 24-20 victory over No. 15 Delaware in 2002, a 10-0 victory over No. 13 Furman in 2003, a 23-21 victory over No. 3 Georgia Southern in 2012, a 28-26 victory over No. 15 Samford in 2013 and a 22-14 victory over No. 5 Chattanooga in 2016.

The stadium has undergone several renovations throughout the years. In 2001, the Altman Athletic Center was constructed in the south end zone. The first floor of the facility features a home and visitor locker room, and a locker room for officials. The second floor of the facility features a spacious entertainment area for members of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation on game days.

In 2005, Hagood Stadium underwent a major renovation to the stadium’s west side. The project featured the installation of 10,500 seats, luxury suites and press box. The west side of the stadium opened in time for the 2006 season and was officially completed in 2008 with the opening of the west side tower.

The field was named Sansom Field in 2008, commemorating alumnus William B. Sansom, a 1964 graduate.

The east side was torn down prior to the start of the 2016 season, bringing the facility to its current capacity of 11,332.

Hagood Stadium is currently installing a new state-of-the-art artificial surface that will be in place for the 2020 season.

Most recently, The Pearson Club was renovated in the summer of 2023 with new flooring and carpet, fresh paint, and Citadel-branded graphics along the walls.

Fans entering the Pearson Club or Executive Suite Levels will do so, through the Ousley Family Entrance, a glass enclosed entrance off of Hagood Avenue.
