Mt. Pleasant, SC – Oceanside Collegiate Academy will celebrate its third consecutive SCHSL state football title on Tuesday morning with a champions walk to open the day.
The Landsharks defeated Belton-Honea Path High 28-7 on Friday at Dawson Stadium on the campus of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. It was the second straight year OCA has bested BHP for the AAA state title.
"We are so proud of this group of student-athletes and coaches for their incredible accomplishment of winning a third consecutive state title," OCA Interim Principal
Mike Lorenz said. "It was a dominant performance against a very high-quality opponent in less-than-ideal weather conditions."
The victory was marred, however, when a significant number of players from both teams got into an altercation near the conclusion of the post-game handshakes.
"Oceanside Collegiate Academy has a strict policy with regard to fighting and, even though our students did not instigate this incident, we are carefully reviewing all available video from the event to ensure all members of our team and staff met the high standards for sportsmanship we set for ourselves," Lorenz said.
Lorenz added that any OCA student or staff member who acted in an aggressive or unsportsmanlike way would be disciplined appropriately.
"While we are excited to celebrate our third consecutive state football title, we want to make sure all our students understand that aggressive actions toward opponents will not be tolerated," Lorenz said. "I want to applaud the members of our coaching staff and players who did not respond to actions from the other team with violence, but instead focused on defending themselves and diffusing the situation.
"I also want to commend our fans, parents and supporters who attended the game for staying in the stands and not making this unfortunate incident worse. I was extremely proud of the sportsmanship that was on display despite the emotions that led to the incident on the field."
The incident is still under investigation by the South Carolina High School League, Orangeburg law enforcement as well as OCA. Oceanside Collegiate Academy will have no further statements on this incident or any disciplinary actions that might be taken.
