Charleston, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy track team got its first taste of competition for the spring season last Saturday at the Wildcat Classic, hosted by West Ashley High in Charleston.

The Landsharks earned three second place finishes in field events, saw some young athletes make impressive debuts, and had others set new personal bests.

"I always coach my athletes to let the first meet be about being curious and practicing competing," OCA coach Tracy Yancey said. "I never want the first meet to the best. I like to see each athlete progress over the season and bring their best to those final meets. We did, however, see some amazing performances and second place seemed to be the theme."

The Landsharks earned second place in both the boys' and girls' javelin events. Senior Sophie Skidmore took second on the girls' side with a throw of 95-feet, 6-3/4 inches, or 29.13 meters. Freshman Alex Corley finished second in the boys' event with a throw of 158-feet, 9-inches (48.39 meters).

Oceanside also earned a second-place finish in the girls' pole vault as senior Kailen Kramer cleared a mark of 11-feet, 6-inches. Sophomore Kaelyn Welch finished tied for 10th in the same event with a vault of 8-feet, 6-inches.

Junior Zoey Sproat set a personal best with a time of 28.06 in the 200-meters while junior Joey Harriott set his personal best with a time of 23.4 seconds in the same event on the boys' side. Junior Brooks Carlin tied his personal best with a leap of 1.75 meters in the high jump.

Among those with strong debut performances were sophomore Kirkland Allen with a time of 5:51 in the 1600-meters; junior Jayden Yancey with a time of 56.6 seconds in the 400-meters, sophomore Sean Wilson with a time of 2:39.49 in the 800-meters, and Welch in the long jump with a leap of 4.1 meters.

"As a coach, I was pleased with the effort put forth by the athletes who were there," Yancey said. "We will compete in Summerville in the Azalea/Zaxby's Invitational this Saturday and it should be a beautiful day for spectating and competing."
