Terry Hamlin

Coach Terry Hamlin is one of South Carolina's most accomplished distance running coaches and a lifelong advocate for helping athletes realize their full potential. A Charleston native and descendant of one of the area's earliest colonial families, he combines decades of competitive experience with a science-based coaching philosophy built on encouragement, discipline, and perseverance.

After graduating from St. Andrews High School, Coach Hamlin earned a degree in Psychology from the University of South Carolina while studying anthropology and physiology. His fascination with human performance, coupled with his experience as a nationally competitive distance runner, laid the foundation for a coaching career spanning more than five decades.

In 1977, Coach Hamlin founded the Charleston Running Club. One year later, he co-founded the Cooper River Bridge Run, serving as Co-Race Director during its formative years and helping launch what has become one of the world's premier 10K races.

Coach Hamlin holds coaching certifications through USA Track & Field (Level I), the Road Runners Club of America, and the Lydiard Foundation (Level II). Throughout his career, he has coached thousands of runners, including seven U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifiers, while continuing to work with youth athletes, beginners, and elite competitors across the country.

He is also the author of Building a Better Runner, a science-based training guide featuring a foreword by legendary marathon champion Bill Rodgers.

A life-changing accident that resulted in the loss of his left leg below the knee profoundly shaped Coach Hamlin's outlook. Rather than allowing adversity to define him, he embraced what he calls "The Blessing of Adversity," dedicating himself to encouraging wounded veterans, disabled athletes, and anyone striving to overcome life's challenges. His presentations and community work continue to inspire audiences throughout the region.

Coach Hamlin has been recognized as an Icon of Ethical Culture and received the Charleston Community Catalyst Award for his leadership and service. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including Charleston Magazine, Mount Pleasant Magazine, RealTrends, and Runner Magazine.

At Oceanside Collegiate Academy, Coach Hamlin's mission is simple: to help every athlete discover abilities they never knew they possessed. His coaching philosophy centers on positive reinforcement, individualized development, and the belief that success comes from consistent effort, scientific training, and an unwavering commitment to improvement.

Coach Hamlin and his wife, Dolly, live on a small horse farm in the Francis Marion National Forest with their miniature schnauzers, Buddy and Bonnie Blue.
