Coach Patterson has close to 40 years of coaching experience, primarily as an offensive line coach. He served as Interim head coach for the Landsharks in 2024.
Patterson attended Guilford College, earning a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, before earning a Master's Degree in the same discipline from East Carolina University in 1986.Â
He played offensive line at Guilford, an NAIA school, at just 190 pounds, excelling on special teams, eventually being named as a team captain.
A native of High Point, NC, Patterson was part of a conference championship team at T.W. Andrews high and graduated n 1976. His career went full circle when he was selected as head coach at his alma mater in 2016. He was head coach at James Island High from 2007-11 and was then director of athletics at Campbell High in New Hampshire from 2011-15.
His coaching career has included numerous stops in North and South Carolina, as well as New Hampshire. He served as the offensive line coach at Elon when the Phoenix led the nation in rushing in 1992. He has also coached at Winston-Salem State, The Citadel, Elon, Lenoir-Rhyne, Guilford and East Carolina. He was the winningest coach in the history of the Providence Day School in North Carolina when he left in 2001.
He has also served at times as offensive coordinator, strength coach, special teams coach and recruiting coordinator. He was a head coach in the indoor professional league as well as head coach at three different high schools.Â
Patterson has also been a professional body builder since 2021 and owned his own fitness gym for several years. Before turning pro, he has won numerous amateur bodybuilding titles including at the prestigious Mr. Universe and Mr. Carolina, among others. At the age of 61 he finished fourth at the IFBB Pro World Championships in 2022 and was second in the IFBB Pro Chicago in 2024.
His son, Bo, played quarterback for him at James Island High before signing to play football and baseball at Dartmouth College, which is what led the elder Patterson to spend time in New Hampshire.
After leading Oceanside to the Class AAA state title in 2024 as interim head coach, Coach Patterson will return to his primary role as offensive line coach in 2025.
