Susan Smith

Susan has lived in the Charleston area since graduating from Wake Forest University in 1992 with the MA in English, when she began teaching English Composition and Literature at the College of Charleston.

Her graduate area of focus was eighteenth-century literature, culminating in her thesis, The Use of Vulgar Language in Frances Burney’s Novels.

Prior to her years at Wake Forest, she pursued her undergraduate degree in English from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., completed their student-teaching program and earned the Pennsylvania teacher certification. At the College Of Charleston, she also worked as a faculty consultant in their Writing Lab. She had enjoyed working at the Wake Forest Writing Lab as a graduate student and found that most students, high school and college, struggle with their writing skills.

With experience at both the high school and collegiate levels, Susan has focused primarily on preparing students for success in college. She taught English 101 and 102 for Trident Technical College for four years in their dual-credit program at Wando High School. This position specifically gave her the opportunity to prepare high-school students for the complex transition from high school to college.

As a Landshark, she is excited to use her writing and teaching strategies to inspire her students to understand and express themselves with clarity and authority as they explore the world of literature.
