Charleston, SC – Returning home to Johnson-Hagood Stadium on Friday night, the Oceanside Collegiate Academy Landsharks was able to swing momentum to the home side against unbeaten Ashley Ridge High on Senior
Nate Sturm's 80-yard interception return for a touchdown, sparking the Landsharks to a 42-29 victory.
Oceanside improved to 2-2 on the year while the Red Foxes fell to 3-1.
"We expected to win," OCA interim head coach
John Patterson said. "Our offense scored 35 points and our defense got seven, and that was a big momentum swing for us. It was 100 percent a team win with offense and defense, and we knew special teams was going to be huge and we couldn't have done it without all three phases of the game."
The Landsharks found themselves trailing early in the game when Ashley Ridge capped an 80-yard opening drive with a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Kalisz to sophomore Jagger Spivey. The PAT kick from Zion Spivey made the score 7-0 with 8:24 left in the opening quarter.
The Oceanside offense was unable to get anything going on its first possession, putting the ball back to the Red Foxes. It appeared as if Ashley Ridge was going to expand its early lead, driving into Landsharks territory before senior
Nate Sturm stepped in front of a Kalisz pass and returned the interception for a Landsharks touchdown. Sturm added his own PAT to tie the game with 5:28 left in the opening quarter.
That play lit a fire under the Landsharks, who forced a turnover on downs when senior
Grayson Freeling broke up a pass on third down before a long pass on fourth down fell incomplete, giving OCA the ball in Ashley Ridge territory with 3:54 left in the quarter.
Oceanside took quick advantage of the short field when sophomore quarterback
Aiden Manavian connected with senior
Peyton Shaw, who was wide open on a seam route. Shaw took care of the rest, going 42 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with 3:08 left in the opening period. Sturm added the PAT for a 14-7 Landsharks' lead.
OCA's defense continued to lead the way, forcing a three-and-out for Ashley Ridge thanks to a big third down sack by junior defensive end
Sawyer Arnold. The Landsharks got the ball back with just 53 seconds left in the quarter following the Red Foxes punt.
Manavian moved the Landsharks quickly into scoring territory with freshman Tyler Garner for a 28-yard gain into Ashley Ridge territory, then followed up with a quarterback scramble for 24 more yards to the Ashley Ridge 22.
After a penalty pushed the ball back to the 28-yard line with no time left on the clock in the first quarter, Oceanside used the untimed down to push the lead to 21-7 when Shaw took shuffle pass from Manavian to the house. Sturm was again good on the PAT.
To start the second quarter, the Landsharks used an pooch kick, which was recovered by sophomore
Silas Gilliam, to get another possession in Ashley Ridge territory at the 35.
Sophomore running back
James O'Connor moved the ball to the Ashley Ridge 21 on first down before Manavian gained 13-yards to the ARHS 7 for a first and goal. The Landsharks pounded it home from there as junior Terence Johnson, Jr., ran the ball three times at the middle of the Ashley Ridge defense, punching in for the score from 3-yards out with 10:06 left in the half. Sturm made it 28-7 with his fourth PAT.
That is where the score remained until halftime, thanks to the Landsharks defense, which stopped an Ashley Ridge red zone possession on fourth down. The Red Foxes got the ball back with 4:46 left in the half, and despite converting on a fake punt to maintain possession, Oceanside continued to harass the ARHS offense with sacks by Johnson and junior
Michael Jones. The Red Foxes self-destructed at the end of the half, with a holding penalty and a bad snap taking them out of scoring range.
Ashley Ridge decided to take the game to halftime after junior
Jake Thomas recorded the third OCA sack of the half.
The game continued at a frenetic pace in the second half, with a lost fumble by the Landsharks on the opening possession giving Ashley Ridge a short field to work with. The Red Foxes cut into the Oceanside lead when Kalisz capped an 11-play drive with a two-yard plunge for a touchdown with 9:32 left in the third quarter.
Manavian got the Landsharks moving again with a pass to freshman Tyler Garner for a 26-yard gain into Ashley Ridge territory. Manavian went to senior
Gavin Welch for a gain to the 14, and then connected with another senior,
Gavin Gaspar, and a screen pass that Gaspar took to the house. Another Sturm PAT made it 35-24 with 7:13 left in the third quarter.
Ashley Ridge used a nice kickoff return to move quickly into Oceanside territory, but the drive stalled in the Red Zone and the Landsharks forced a turnover on downs.
An Oceanside punt put Ashley Ridge back in business near midfield, and the Red Foxes were able to convert the opportunity into points with the help of a roughing the passer penalty against the Landsharks. Jayden Acosta paid off the OCA mistake with a seven-yard TD run with 1:18 left in the third. The PAT cut the Landsharks' lead to 35-21.
Oceanside's offensive attack went into game management mode after the score, running out the clock in the third quarter. The Landsharks converted on a fourth down pass from Manavian to senior
Will Virgilio down for a 34-yard gain to the Ashley Ridge three. Three plays later, Johnson, Jr., sprinted around the left end from one yard away with 7:36 to play for another OCA touchdown. Sturm converted the point after for a 42-21 Landsharks lead.
Oceanside senior
Jack Wattie further put the game away when he intercepted a Kalisz pass with 6:28 to play, but the Landsharks gave the ball right back on a fumble with 4:40 left in the game. Ashley Ridge took advantage of that mistake with a quick scoring drive. Acosta scored his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard run with 2:49 to play. Acosta then carried in the two-point conversion to account for the final margin.
The Landsharks recovered the Ashley Ridge onside kick attempt, protected the ball and punted back to ARHS with 1:31 left. Senior
Travis Anderson made sure the Red Foxes got no closer, stripping an Ashley Ridge receiver and recovering the fumble to clinch the victory.
Manavian finished with 224 yards passing while throwing for three touchdowns.
