Summerville, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy softball team had an uneven weekend at the Battle on the Bases Tournament at Wescott Park.
The Landsharks finished the weekend with a record of 1-2-1 but closed the event on a high with a 19-3 victory over Westwood High.
"It was a really rough weekend because we have a lot of injuries, so a lot of people were playing out of position," OCA coach
Alecia Robinson said. "It definitely gave us an insight on areas that need more. We have room to grow defensively, and our offense showed strength 1-9 consistently all weekend.
"We will need to continue to play clean defense and give our pitchers the run support to let them play loose."
The Landsharks opened the tournament on Friday against Stratford High in a game that ended in a 7-7 tie. After allowing a single run on an error in the top of the second, Oceanside plated four runs in the bottom of the inning to seemingly take control of the game.
Freshman
Hollis Rivers singled in the first run of the game and then junior
Mia Rosenburgh scored on a passed ball to put OCA in front 2-1. Freshman
Val Parolin delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 before senior
Addison Miller delivered a two-run single for a 5-1 OCA lead.
The Knights answered right back, scoring six times in the third. Stratford had five hits in the inning – two singles, two doubles and a triple – and benefitted from a walk, a hit batter and three OCA defensive errors to take a 7-5 lead.
Oceanside tied the game in the third inning, scoring a pair of runs on a Stratford error, but left a pair of runners on base in the inning. The game was called at that point due to the time limit.
The Landsharks came back later Friday to face West Ashley, but that game went bad from the start. OCA scored twice in the top of the first, one on an inside the park home run by Parolin and the second on an RBI single by sophomore
Hannah Bagwell. Things turned for the Landsharks in the bottom of the inning as the Wildcats scored 13 runs on eight hits with the help of three walks, three errors and a passed ball.
Oceanside got a run back in the second on a pair of West Ashley errors, but the Wildcats put the game away with two more in the bottom of the frame before the game was called by time.
Saturday's play started for Oceanside against Fort Dorchester, and the Patriots took advantage of five Landsharks errors, plus a combined no-hitter pitching, to take an 8-0 victory in six innings.
The Landsharks cleaned up their defense and got the bats going in their final game of the tournament. Oceanside scored four runs in the first inning against Westwood before plating five in each of the next three frames. Sophomore shortstop
Kendall Bas scored four runs and had a pair of hits from the leadoff spot. Bagwell scored three runs and drove in six with a pair of singles. Freshman
Alexa Miller had three hits and scored four runs.
Rosenburgh had a pair of hits and scored three times in addition to pitching all four innings in the game, allowing just two earned runs. Stubbs had a pair of hits in the game and drove in three while sophomore
Brooke Bas added a pair of hits.
The Landsharks will have a week off to get healthy and work on things in preparation for games at Cane Bay on Tuesday, March 11, and at home against James Island Charter on Wednesday. They will then play in the Lady Rebel Invitational in Duncan, SC, at the Tyger River Park on March 14-15.
