Our new school leader, Dr. Kelly Linkenhoker, is visiting OCA this week and she is meeting with staff and students. Dr. Linkenhoker was at the Prom on Saturday and at our Oyster Roast on Sunday.
As she begins transitioning for her move to South Carolina, Dr. Linkenhoker is still serving as principal at her high school in Virginia and will be finishing up the school year there. She will be moving to the Lowcountry in June and will be starting at Oceanside on July 1st.
We are so blessed to have an amazing principal to lead OCA next year! She brings such a positive attitude that will spread to the people around her.
Congratulations to Coach Hollis for winning the SCAAA Bravehart Award.
I want to take a moment to share a story from our AD, Mark Meyer. This is not just about basketball, but about strength, resilience, and what it truly means to lead.
On December 15, 2024, what started as a routine doctor's visit for a back injury changed Coach Quinton's life forever. At the time, his daughter Braylen had already been fighting cancer for two years. And in a moment no parent is ever prepared for, he learned that he would soon be fighting that same battle himself.
We all know him as Coach Q.
But beyond the coach, beyond the wins and losses, he is a father… and a fighter.
On December 30, 2024 — a date that will never be forgotten — Coach Q experienced both unimaginable loss and the beginning of his own fight. That was the day Braylen passed away… and it was also the very first day of his cancer treatment.
Most people would break under the weight of that moment. But not Coach Q.
From day one, his mindset was simple — if the story starts this low, the only direction left is up.
Every season, Coach Q talks to his team about handling adversity. This year… he didn't just preach it — he lived it.
I remember the day he told the team about his diagnosis. Sitting in a wheelchair, unable to walk, he stood in front of his players and shared the news. And I can tell you — there wasn't a dry eye in the gym.
And yet… even in that moment… he was still leading. He missed just three games early in the season. Three.
Because whether it was in a wheelchair or walking with a cane, Coach Q made sure he showed up for his players. He showed them what commitment looks like. What toughness looks like. What love looks like.
With the support of his family, his assistant coaches, and the entire athletic department, he continued to lead this team through one of the most remarkable seasons we've ever seen.
A season that ended with a 23–2 record, but let me be clear — that record is not the most impressive thing about this story. The most impressive thing… is the example he set.
He taught these young men that adversity doesn't define you — your response does.
He showed them that even in your darkest moments, you can still stand tall for others.
And he proved that true strength isn't just physical… it's mental, it's emotional, and it's rooted in love.Coach Q, your impact goes far beyond basketball. You've inspired a team, a school, and an entire community. And Braylen … her strength, her fight, her spirit … lives on through you every single day.
Today, we honor not just a great coach … but an incredible man.
Coach Q, we love you, we stand with you, and we are all better because of you.
Congratulations also go out to coach Mark Meyer for winning the Region Athletic Director of the Year!
OCA is so blessed to have such a great Athletic Director. Well derived award! Last year OCA won 13 region championships and 8 state championships. Mark won his 5th straight girls soccer state championship. OCA finished number 7th best athletic school in the country and number 1 in South Carolina. This is the highest ranking in school history by Max pep number 7. By the way Mark is also an amazing cook as he has provided OCA staff with many amazing meals over the years.
