Mt. Pleasant, SC – For the third consecutive year, The Oceanside Collegiate Academy Landsharks athletics program has finished among the best programs in the nation, according the MaxPreps.
The Landsharks, who captured seven state titles and two state runner-up finishes in the South Carolina High School League Class AA in 2023-24, finished the year ranked 16
th in the nation.
"This is truly a tribute to the quality of the coaches and staff we have here at Oceanside as well as the dedication our students have to excelling at the highest level," OCA Director of Athletics
Mark Meyer said. "I tell our coaches and student-athletes every year that if they go out and win state titles, this kind of recognition will take care of itself."
The Landsharks brought home state titles in football, baseball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis and boys golf while earning runner-up finishes in boys basketball and girls golf. Both OCA soccer teams finished ranked in the top 10 nationally, with the boys earning a No. 4 national ranking and the girls finishing ranked 10
th.
"Those top 10 national rankings earn bonus points in the MaxPreps overall rankings, and some sports are weighted higher than others," Meyer said. "The thing to remember is these rankings compare all programs, public and private as well as charter schools."
For the second year in a row, Oceanside is the top-ranked athletic program in the state of South Carolina, with the closest in-state competition coming from Fort Mill High, which finished the year ranked 81
st in the nation followed by Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville at 82
nd. Porter-Gaud High in Charleston finished ranked 87
th while Bishop England finished ranked 91
st and Daniel High finishing 99
th.
With six programs ranked among the top 100 in the nation, South Carolina tied with Florida and Georgia for the most schools ranked for this past school year with Alabama (5) and Texas, California and Massachusetts tied with four each.
The top-ranked program in the nation for the second consecutive year was Wayzata High in Plymouth, Minn. The Trojans won six state titles, had five teams finish as state runner up and had four teams ranked in the top 25 nationally for their sport. Wayzata accumulated 2,504 points in the MaxPreps ranking to capture the title.
Others in the final top five of the rankings this year were West Albemarle High in Crozet, Va. (2,123), Bentonville (Ark.) High (2,106), New Trier High in Winnetka, Ill. (2,080) and Mountain Brook (Ala.) High (2,033). MaxPreps scores more than 37,000 high school athletics programs across the nation for the MaxPreps Cup.
In addition to the top 20 national ranking, Oceanside was also recognized by the SCHSL with the Carlisle Cup, which is awarded each year to the top overall program in each of the League's five Divisions. It is the third consecutive year the Landsharks have captured that honor, the last two in Class AA after winning in Class AAA in 2021-22.
Oceanside will move back into SCHSL's Class AAA for the 2024-25 school year, competing in Region 6 with Battery Creek, Hanahan, North Charleston and Orangeburg-Wilkinson.
