Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy varsity baseball team got the season off to a hot start, sweeping through the Shipyard/PBR Showdown at Shipyard Park last weekend.
The Landsharks opened on Friday with a five-run walk-off rally in the seventh inning to down Eastside 8-7 and then followed up Saturday with a three-hit shutout, 6-0 victory over Catawba Ridge. OCA improved to 3-0 and advanced to the championship game on Sunday with a 4-1 victory over Chapman High and then took the tournament title on Monday with a 6-1 win over Fountain Inn High.
In addition to the varsity sweeping through the PBR Showdown, the Landsharks' junior varsity team went 3-0 in the Berkeley Singleton JV Tournament in Moncks Corner, downing Lucy Beckham 7-3 and Stratford 6-2 on Saturday before returning to defeat Hanahan 8-2 on Tuesday afternoon. The JV Sharks will go back to Moncks Corner this Saturday to face the host Stags at 12:30 p.m.
The Varsity Landsharks had this entire week off following the tournament clinching win on Monday. They will return to action on Monday at Beaufort. The JV squad is scheduled to face the Eagles at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity squads slated for a 7 p.m. start.
It will be a busy week next week for the baseball teams with home games against East Forsyth on Tuesday and Atlantic Collegiate Academy on Wednesday.
Here is a game-by-game recap of last weekend's baseball action for both teams.
OCA 8, Eastside 7 – Varsity
Things did not look good for the Landsharks early on as Eastside jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings, thanks to seven hits and three walks, against OCA sophomore starting pitcher
Charlie Becker. An error played a big part in the Eagles' three-run second inning and a two-out, two-run single made it 5-0 in the third.
Oceanside started chipping away in the fifth, when a pair of walks set the stage for a two-out, two-run double by senior
Caden Fragola. It was the first hit of the game for the Landsharks against Eastside sophomore pitcher Cooper Devries.
Sophomore
Cade Griffith came on to pitch the middle innings for the Landsharks, holding the Eagles without a run on two hits over three innings of work.
OCA closed to within 5-3 in the home half of the sixth, plating a runner from third with an unearned run on a ground ball double play.
The Eagles pushed their lead to 7-3 in the top half of the seventh against senior right-hander
Tyler Mellison. With two runners on base and two out in the inning, sophomore Anson Reynolds singled home an Eastside run before an infield error allowed the second run to score.
Eastside pitching allowed the Landsharks to get back into the game. Reliever S. Sanchez walked the first two hitters he faced and then hit the third to load the bases before giving way on the mound to senior Gregory Bryant, who promptly hit senior
Andrew Palmer with a pitch to force in a run. Senior
Aidan Brusman followed by drawing a walk to cut the deficit to 7-5 before Becker sent the Landsharks home happy with a three-run, game-winning triple.
OCA 6, Catawba Ridge 0 – Varsity
Fragola and sophomore
Henry Elizondo teamed up on the mound to dominate the Copperheads. Fragola got the win, allowing one hit and three walks over five innings of work while recording five strikeouts. Elizondo worked the final two innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three.
The Landsharks' offensive attack scored all the runs it needed off senior CR starter Caden Glauber in the third inning. A pair of hits and a walk loaded the bases for Palmer with no one out, and he delivered a two-run double to get the scoring started. After the next two OCA hitters were retired, junior
Charlie Johnson plated two more with a triple over the right fielder's head for a 4-0 lead.
Oceanside, playing as the visiting team in this game, added a pair of runs in the top half of the seventh when two runners scored on a wild pitch with two out in the inning.
OCA 4, Chapman 1 – Varsity
Pitching again dominated as a trio of Landsharks combined to no-hit the Panthers. Sophomore
Aiden Culler worked the first four innings, recording eight strikeouts with three walks. Mellison came on in the fifth, working 2.2 innings while allowing a run on three walks and a hit batter while striking out six. The run he allowed came on a bases loaded walk with two out in the seventh.
Sophomore
Finn Kucaba came on to get a fly ball to end the game and earn a one-pitch save.
The Landsharks scored early against Chapman starter Lewis McAlister with Palmer delivering a two-out single in the first to score Fragola. OCA pushed its lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Brusman delivered a two-out single to right, scoring three runners.
OCA 6, Fountain Inn 1 – Varsity
In Monday's championship game, the Landsharks continued to ride their pitching as Griffith made his first start, working five innings while allowing just one run on three hits. Elizondo came on to close out the final two innings in the win.
Offensively, the Landsharks scored all the runs they needed off Fury starter Cole Dawkins, chasing him in the second inning after pushing across four runs on just two hits with four walks. Brusman drove in the first run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. In the second Kucaba had an RBI single then came in to score on a wild pitch. Senior catcher
Scott Henry and sophomore
Tanner Fleming scored on a triple off reliever Grayson Watson by Palmer for a 5-0 lead. Brusman then singled Palmer home to make it 6-0.
The Fury scored its only run in the bottom of the second on a two-out single by Austin Holtzee. It was the final hit of the game for Fountain Inn.
OCA 7, Lucy Beckham 3 – Junior Varsity
The Landsharks plated four runs in the first inning and never looked back in earning their first win of the year. Starting pitcher
Lucas Ackerman posted five strikeouts over three shutout innings of work and
Grant Snegon followed with three strong innings of his own, allowing just one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts.
OCA touched up junior Roth Watts for the four runs in the opening inning thanks to a walk and a hit by pitch, which was followed by an errant pickoff throw to move both runners into scoring position. A wild pitch scored
JJ Cox from third before a
Barrett Svagerko double put two runners back in scoring position. A ground ball scored one and a wild pitch scored another, making it 3-0. Another hit by pitch and a single by
Alexander Peebles loaded the bases and produced another run when
Hank Griffith was hit by a pitch.
Beckham got a run back in the fourth off Snegon when Cole Pritchett doubled home Tyson Horan, who had reached on an error.
The Landsharks put the game away with three runs in the seventh thanks to two singles, a walk and an error.
Noah Long came on to pitch the bottom of the inning for Oceanside, allowing a pair of runs on three hits before getting a pop out to end the game.
OCA 6, Stratford 2 – Junior Varsity
Oceanside came back for a second game on Saturday and pounded out 11 hits against Knights pitching to earn the victory.
Ackerman, Griffith and
Banks Luton had two hits each in the game while Stratford's defense compounded the issue by committing four errors.
The trio of
Ellis Mull,
Britt Reames and
Parker Moses kept the Knights at bay despite allowing a combined seven walks. Mull started and worked four innings, allowing a run on four hits with three strikeouts. Reames allowed an unearned run in his inning of work with two walks while recording three strikeouts. Moses pitched two shoutout frames with one hit and three walks.
OCA 8, Hanahan 2 – Junior Varsity
Pitching continued to do the job of the junior varsity Sharks on Tuesday as Ackerman, Griffith and Reams held the Hawks to just four hits while striking out six.
Hanahan's defense didn't help its pitching much as the Hawks committed six errors in the game while the Hanahan hurlers also walked five batters.
Svagerko led the Oceanside offensive attack with three hits, including a double. He scored one run and drove in another. The other 10 hits in the game were all singles, with Moses and Luton adding two hits each.
It was not until the fifth inning that Oceanside took control of the game, scoring four times. The Landsharks followed up with three runs in the sixth. The game was called due to the time limit after the bottom of that frame.
