Cayce, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy boys' tennis team made a strong statement over the weekend, winning the Cayce Preseason Tournament without dropping a single game in four matches.
The Landsharks, who are looking to win their fifth consecutive state title, opened the tournament on Friday with a 6-0 victory over Irmo High. They followed up on Saturday with 6-0 wins over River Bluff an Dreher High Schools to advance to Sunday's championship match.
Oceanside squared off against rival Myrtle Beach High in the championship match and blanked the Seahawks 6-0 as well to complete the weekend sweep.
"This is the way we wanted to start our season," OCA coach
Shawn Harris said. "This team is determined to win its fifth straight state championship. There is just no letup on this team. They are always playing hard and with a purpose."
The Landsharks clinched the tournament title with a dominant performance against Myrtle Beach. The duo of sophomore
Huck Reynolds and
Helms Sander earned the doubles point for OCA by downing the Myrtle Beach duo of junior Foster Cahill and sophomore Caleb Cahill 6-3, 7-5.
In singles play, OCA's No. 1, senior
Alex Lozano, had his hands full against junior Spenser Green for a while, but won in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. Junior
Luke Skillman dispatched MBHS senior Ashiv Patel in with consecutive set scores of 6-3.
Freshman
William Claus squared off against Myrtle Beach seventh grader Wyatt Anderson in the No. 3 singles match, winning 6-1, 6-1. Fellow freshman
Ollie Pfarr dispatched another Seahawks seventh grader, Gage CanWagner, without losing a single game, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior
Jackson Nichols finished off the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over freshman Kenneth Gunther.
The Landsharks opened the tournament by routing Irmo. Sander and sophomore
Carter Heath took the doubles point 6-0, 6-1. In singles play, all five OCA players – Lozano, Claus, Nichols, Pfarr and Reynolds – won their matches by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores.
In the second round against River Bluff Reynolds and Sander won the doubles point 6-0, 6-0. Lozano won his match 6-2, 6-2, while Skillman (6-1, 6-0) and Claus (6-2, 6-0) both cruised. Nichols and Pfarr both posted shutouts, winning 6-0, 6-0.
In OCA's win over Dreher, Sander and Heath again teamed up for the doubles point, winning 6-0, 6-0. Lozano won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 with Skillman (6-0, 6-0), Claus (6-0, 6-0), Nichols (6-1, 6-0) and Reynolds (6-0, 6-1) easily dispatching their opponents.
The Landsharks will be back in action next week when they face Philip Simmons on Monday, Hanahan in a region contest on Tuesday, and Carmel Christian on Friday.
