Charleston, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy girls' tennis team continued its march toward a fourth consecutive state title with a 5-1 victory at Academic Magnet on October 3.
The Landsharks followed that win with a strong performance on Tuesday, October 8, at Hanahan to improve to 8-0 on the season.
Against Academic Magnet the Landsharks won four of the five singles points as well as the doubles point. Senior
Kate Johnson won her match at the No. 1 spot but had a battle in the first set before taking a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Fellow senior
Izzie Johnson also won in straight sets at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1.
Junior
Gianna Cannonie won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and sophomore
Fallon Higgins won at the No. 5 singles position by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Senior
Talula Enright played the No. 4 singles spot but was forced to retire from her match due to illness.
The Landsharks won a hard-fought match for the doubles point with sophomores
Elloree Besta and
Addison Levy winning in a third set tiebreaker. The OCA duo took the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 5-7. They secured the match with a 10-4 victory in the tiebreaker.
"Everyone played very well and is focused on our goal of winning a fourth straight state championship," OCA coach
Shawn Harris said.
In the match against Hanahan on Tuesday, the Landsharks did not lose a single game. Senior Ella Deford played No. 1 singles, Johnson played No. 2, Cannonie was at No. 3,
Addison Levy at No. 4 and freshman Sophia Senolt at No. 5. Johnson and Levi teamed up to win the doubles point.
The Landsharks have two regular season matches remaining before play in the state tournament begins on October 24. OCA is scheduled to face Battery Creek next Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Lucy Beckham next Wednesday at 4 p.m. The SCHSL team championship is scheduled for November 9.
