Pawleys Island, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy girls' tennis team set a goal before the start of the 2024 season to keep the streak alive. The Landsharks have won three consecutive SCHSL state titles and, after defeating Waccamaw 6-0 on Tuesday, they can now complete that goal.
Oceanside (12-1) will face Christ Church Episcopal at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the Class AAA title. The match is scheduled to be played at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
No stranger to state titles, the Cavaliers have won 20 state titles in girls tennis going back to the 1976-77 school year. CCES is looking to defend its title from last year, advancing to the match against OCA with a 6-0 victory over Southside Christian.
To get to the title match, the Landsharks dominated a solid Waccamaw team, dropping just four sets in the five singles matches.
"The team played with confidence and can't wait to play for the state championship this Saturday," head coach
Shawn Harris said. "Christ Church has a great team and I expect it to be a very close match. We will have to play well to win, but we are prepared and ready."
Senior
Ella DeFord continued her run of success at the No. 1 singles position, downing Waccamaw's Izzy Dozier 6-0, 6-0. Senior captain
Kate Johnson defeated Megan Madigan at No. 2 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-0. The Landsharks' other senior captain,
Izzie Johnson, downed Ida Davis 6-1, 6-1 to make it 3-0.
Junior
Gianna Cannonie had not problems in her match against Milly Harris, winning 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Sophia Sebolt defeated Waccamaw's Maggie Propps 6-1, 6-0 in the final singles match.
The sophomore duo of
Addison Levy and
Elloree Besta had a battle from Waccamaw's Lainey Jordan and Emily Nettles, but took the match 6-4, 7-5 to complete the sweep.
