Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy girls' tennis team took another step toward a fourth consecutive SCHSL state title on Monday with a 6-0 victory over Georgetown at the Mt. Pleasant Tennis Complex.
The Landsharks will have a quick turnaround from that win as they face Waccamaw this afternoon for the Lower State title and a berth in Saturday's AAA championship match.
Oceanside (11-1) easily handled the Bulldogs, winning each of the five singles and one doubles match by scores of 6-0, 6-0. It was the second consecutive playoff match in which the Landsharks did not lose a single game.
Ella DeFord won at the No. 1 singles spot with
Kate Johnson at No. 2 and
Izzie Johnson at No. 3. Junior
Gianna Cannonie played at the No. 4 singles spot and sophomore Fallon Figgins at the No. 5 spot. Sophomores
Addison Levy and
Elloree Besta continued to roll in doubles play.
"Our team was ready from the start and got the job done," OCA coach
Shawn Harris said. "These girls are determined to with their fourth straight state championship, and we are just two matches away from doing that. They are ready and focused."
The Landsharks will likely have their hands full today against Waccamaw (13-7), which is looking for its second AAA state title in three years. The Warriors are led by No. 1 Izzy Dozier, No. 2 Megan Madigan, No. 3 Ida Davis, No. 4 Milly Harris, No. 5 Maggie Propps, No. 6 Lainey Jordan and No. 7 Emily Nettles. Jordan and Nettles also play doubles together.
"Waccamaw has a talented team, and we knew we would likely have to face them in the Lower State championship," Harris said. "Our senior captains, Kate and
Izzie Johnson, have the team hyped up and ready to play. This will be a challenging match and we are looking forward to it."
Oceanside honored its seniors prior to the match on Monday. Those seniors are DeFord,
Talula Enright, and the Johnson sisters.
