Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy varsity basketball teams both posted victories on Monday night at the OCA gym.
The Landshark girls team ran its season record to 6-1 with a 53-40 victory and the boys team followed up with a 56-31 victory, improving to 3-0 on the year. Marion was able to prevent an outright sweep of the evening with a 37-31 victory over the OCA boys' junior varsity squad.
"This was a solid team win against a Marion team that came into the game with a 5-1 record," OCA girls coach
Mandy Harrison said. "Their only loss was to 4A Wilson and they are known for their aggressive, full court, defense."
The Landsharks were able to edge in front for a 14-12 lead by the end of the first quarter, but the second quarter turned into a defensive battle with neither team able to generate much offense. Oceanside maintained a slim advantage, 22-18, as the game went to halftime.
Oceanside was able to build on that lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Swamp Foxes 14-9 to take a 36-27 lead into the final quarter. The Landsharks put the game away in the final period to take the victory.
"We made the necessary adjustments at halftime to allow us to score in the paint in the second half," Harrison said. "I am proud of our team for buckling down in the second half to get this victory."
Senior co-captain
Ella Mae Schepp led the Landsharks with 16 points in the game. Junior guard
Henley Hanks added 15 points and senior forward
Teagan Scott added 12.
The Landsharks will continue a six-game home stand on Wednesday night when they host Cathedral Academy at 6 p.m. They will also host James Island Charter on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
In the nightcap of the evening, it was OCA junior forward
Jake Thomas who stole the show. Thomas got the Landsharks off to a good start by scoring seven of the teams' 12 first quarter points to give OCA a five-point lead.
The rest of the Landsharks carried the load in the second quarter as OCA pushed its advantage to 26-15 by halftime. Oceanside blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Swamp Foxes 17-5 before coasting home in the fourth quarter.
Thomas, who had nine points in the first half, poured in 15 more after halftime to finish with 24 points to lead the way. Senior forward
Drew Swyt chipped in with eight points for the Landsharks, who got contributions from all eight players who dressed for the game.
Like the girls' team, both OCA boys' squads will be back in action on Wednesday night, hosting Cathedral Academy. The JV boys are scheduled for a 5 p.m. start while the varsity team will tip off around 8 p.m. Both quads will host James Island Charter on Friday night with the same scheduled start times.
