Mt. Pleasant, SC – The defending SCHSL Class AA state runner-up Oceanside Landsharks will roll into the Class AAA playoffs next week riding a 17-game win streak and the state's No. 1 ranking after thrashing Hanahan 52-23 Thursday night to wrap-up the regular season.
The Landsharks take a 21-1 overall record into the post-season after sweeping through their first year in Region 6-AAA with a perfect 8-0 mark. Oceanside is scheduled to face Swansea High (0-18) in the opening round of the playoffs on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The Oceanside girls also finished the regular season on a strong note, blasting Hanahan 52-21 to close the year on a six-game win streak of their own. The Landsharks (19-5, 7-1) are ranked fifth in Class AAA and will open their playoff run against Silver Bluff High on Monday night at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 5-17 record, including an 0-7 mark in Region 4 play, having lost their last nine games.
The OCA JV boys opened play on Thursday night with a 37-30 victory over Hanahan.
The Landshark girls captured their region title and host spot in the playoffs by holding Hanahan (14-8, 7-2) to seven or fewer points in all four quarters.
The Oceanside boys' varsity took a note from the girls' playbook, allowing Hanahan (4-19, 0-8) no more than seven points in any quarter in a run-away victory. The Landsharks jumped out to a commanding 21-7 lead in the opening quarter and coasted from there to the win.
The Landsharks were led in scoring by senior
Carson Jones, who continued his hot shooting from the outside with a pair of threes as a part of his 12 points. Fellow senior guard
Tyrek Dawson added 10 points for the Landsharks, who led 34-14 by halftime. The trio of
Abe Davinroy,
Jaylen Heyward and
Terence Johnson Jr. finished the game with eight points each.
Should the Oceanside teams come out of their opening round games victorious, they will turn around to play a second-round home game next week as well. The OCA girls would face the winner of the matchup between Swansea (7-9) and Waccamaw (11-15) on Wednesday. The OCA boys would face the winner of the game between Silver Bluff (12-10) and either Georgetown (15-10) or Waccamaw (16-10), whichever finishes third in Region 3.
That second round boys game would be played in the OCA gym on Thursday night.
