Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy varsity basketball teams continued their hot start to the season on Wednesday by sweeping a pair of home games from Cathedral Academy.
The Landsharks girls' team turned in a completely dominating performance in a 47-11 victory over the Generals to improve to 7-1 on the season while the boys' varsity earned a hard-fought 69-56 victory to improve to 4-0 on the year, handing Cathedral just its second loss.
The only snag on the night for the Landsharks came in the junior varsity boys' game, with the Generals (7-1) taking a 39-19 victory.
The Oceanside girls' team left little doubt as to the result of their game as the Landsharks raced out to a 22-1 lead in the opening quarter. OCA got scoring in the quarter from six different players.
Cathedral posted its only basket of the first three quarters on a three-pointer in the second quarter by Madison Jackson. Oceanside matched that three in the second quarter with three-point jumpers from senior
Ella Mae Schepp and freshman
Louisa Moore, taking a 31-5 advantage into halftime.
The Landsharks blanked Cathedral (1-9) in the third quarter with junior
Ella Hunter scoring five of the 11 OCA points in the period.
No one managed to score in double figures in the game, but Oceanside was led by Hunter with nine points.
The Landsharks jumped out to an early lead in the boys' game as well, as senior
Tyrek Dawson got off to a fast start, scoring seven of his game-high 18 points in the opening quarter as OCA took a 20-11 lead.
OCA stretched its lead to 33-20 by halftime behind five second quarter points from junior
Jake Thomas.
The two teams traded baskets at a brisk rate in the second half, with both teams scoring 36 points. Oceanside used strong shooting from the outside to connect on seven three-pointers while Cathedral answered with five of their own.
Behind Dawson, junior
Abe Davinroy finished with 15 points while senior
Gabriel Riesgo-Rivera finished with 11. Bryce Ward led Cathedral (12-2) with 17 points in the game.
All three Oceanside teams will be back in action at the OCA Gym on Friday night hosting James Island Charter. The boys' JV game is set for a 5 p.m. start with the girls' game scheduled for 6 p.m. and the boys' varsity to close out the night starting at 7:30 p.m.
