Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy boys' basketball team faced a difficult two-game weekend that resulted in a split of the game.
The Landsharks hosted James Island Charter on Friday night at the OCA Gym and built a 29-22 lead over the Trojans by halftime, but OCA went ice cold on the offensive end of the floor in the second half and fell 49-36. James Island did most of its damage from the free throw line, connecting on 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the second half while OCA managed just two attempts.
Junior
Jake Thomas led the Landsharks with seven points in the game while Gavin Ward scored 19 to lead James Island.
The Landsharks had no time to get down about the loss, returning to action on Saturday afternoon against Cane Bay high in the Lowcountry Showcase, played at the North Charleston Athletic Center.
Thomas was selected as the game MVP for Oceanside, scoring a game-high 18 points in leading the Landsharks to a 57-42 victory. Thomas gave OCA the edge in the paint, scoring 10 of his points under the basket.
The game was tied at 13 after the opening quarter and was still tied at 27 at the halftime break. The Landsharks pushed out to an eight-point lead by the end of the third quarter, connecting on three of their eight three-point baskets in the period.
The Landsharks turned on the defensive pressure in the game, forcing 14 turnovers, with senior
Tyrek Dawson picking up five steals. The Landsharks also hit 47 percent of their shots from three-point range. Junior
Abe Davinroy scored nine of his 14 points from the perimeter while senior
Carson Jones also hit a trio of threes as part of his 11 points.
Senior
Gabriel Riesgo-Rivera ran the offense to near perfecting, picking up six assists.
The Landsharks (5-1) will be back in action tonight as they travel to Conway to take on sister school Atlantic Collegiate Academy (3-1) at 7:30 p.m.
Oceanside Girls 46, James Island 39
The Landsharks improved to 8-1 on the year by pulling away from visiting James Island in the fourth quarter.
Junior guard
Josie Hanks led Oceanside with 12 points, including hitting four crucial free throws in the final quarter. Junior
Ella Hunter hit a pair of three-pointers and scored 10 points in the game.
Tiana Grae led James Island with 11 points in the game.
The Landsharks will host Atlantic Collegiate Academy (1-6) on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.

The Landsharks (0-4) will square against Atlantic Collegiate (2-1) tonight at 6 p.m. in Conway.
