Charleston, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy boys' basketball team opened the three-day Middleton Hoops Elite Showcase on Thursday night with a strong performance in a 54-39 victory over host James Island Charter.
The Landsharks (7-1) will be back in action this afternoon against West Ashley High with the game scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip.
The victory for Oceanside avenged the Landsharks' only loss of the season, which came to the Trojans (5-3) just last week.
Oceanside jumped out to a commanding early lead by connecting on open three-point shots. Senior
Carson Jones connected on a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter while classmate
Tyrek Dawson hit a pair of his own as the Landsharks raced out to a 19-5 advantage.
That duo kept the pressure on in the second quarter, with both hitting an additional three-pointer while opening up the inside game for juniors
Jake Thomas and
Terence Johnson to get easy baskets in the paint. The combination helped Oceanside to a 35-15 lead by halftime.
Dawson continued to do damage from the perimeter in the third quarter, connecting on two more three-pointers while junior
Abe Davinroy got in on the action with a pair of baskets, including a three, as Oceanside pushed the lead to 48-25.
Junior
Kaedon Sanders hit the last of Oceanside's 12 three-pointers in the final quarter as the Landsharks salted the game away.
Dawson led all scorers with 16 points, hitting five three-pointers, while Jones added 13 for the Landsharks. Senior guard Gavin Ward led James Island with 13 points, hitting 8-of-9 free throws, while senior forward Parker Renault finished the game with 12 points.
In the opening game of the tournament on Thursday West Ashley defeated Wando 55-48.
Today's tournament schedule features Oceanside against West Ashley in the opener at 5 p.m. following by Wando facing Bluffton at 6:30 p.m. and ending with James Island hosting Socastee at 8 p.m.
Saturday's tournament schedule opens at 2 p.m. with the Landsharks playing Socastee. West Ashley will take on Cathedral at 3:30 p.m. with James Island and Wando set to close out the event at 5 p.m.
