Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy boys' basketball team ran its win streak to nine consecutive games with a 62-35 victory over Battery Creek on Friday night at the OCA gym.
The Landsharks are now 13-1 overall on the year and are off to a 1-0 start in region 6AAA play. Oceanside is currently ranked third overall in the state and is No. 1 in Class AAA. Battery Creek fell to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in region play with the loss.
The boys' junior varsity team also picked up a victory against Battery Creek, downing the Dolphins 44-30.
Oceanside jumped out to a quick lead over the Dolphins thanks to early baskets by juniors
Jake Thomas and
Abe Davinroy. That duo combined for 15 points in the first quarter as the Landsharks sprinted out to a 23-3 lead.
Senior
Carson Jones and junior
Kaedon Sanders hit three-point baskets in the second quarter, but Battery Creek was able to stay within striking range by hitting 9-of-14 free throws. Oceanside took a 35-16 lead into halftime.
The Landsharks poured it on again in the third quarter with Jones,
Drew Swyt and
Gabriel Riesgo-Rivera all hitting three pointers while OCA connected on 9-of-10 from the free throw line to push the lead to 58-25. The final quarter was focused on running out the clock.
Riesgo-Rivera led the Landsharks with 12 points in the game, thanks in large part to hitting 9-of-10 free throws. Overall, 10 OCA players scored in the game. The Oceanside defense held Battery Creek to just nine made field goals in the game. The Dolphins were 18-of-27 at the free throw line and did not have anyone score in double figures.
The Landsharks enter a busy stretch of games on Friday, starting with a road trip to face Orangeburg-Wilkinson (12-3) in a matchup of the top two ranked teams in Class AAA. The Bears are ranked 22
nd overall in the state in addition to being No. 2 in Class AAA.
That game will be followed up on Monday with a game against Greer (10-6), ranked No. 7 in Class AAAA in the MLK Bash. That game will be played at Eau Claire High School and is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
The Landsharks will then host Hanahan (4-11) on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in region play.
