Beaufort, SC – Like many teams across the Lowcountry of South Carolina, the Oceanside Collegiate Academy basketball squads got an unexpected week-long break from their regular schedule because of last week's winter weather.
The Landsharks looked as if they didn't suffer any ill effects from the time off, powering past Battery Creek High 61-29 on Tuesday night. OCA improved to 16-1 on the season, 3-0 in region 6-AAA by winning its 11
th consecutive game. Battery Creek fell to 9-9 overall with the loss and the Dolphins stand 1-3 in region competition.
The Oceanside boys are currently ranked No. 1 in the state in class AAA and are ranked second, behind only unbeaten Class AAAAA school James F. Byrnes High, in the overall state rankings.
In addition to the OCA boys' varsity posting a big win, the JV won its game against Battery Creek 31-20 while the Oceanside girls continued to dominate their competition, defeating the Dolphins 69-28 to improve to 14-5 overall on the year, 2-1 in region play. The Oceanside girls are currently ranked No. 3 in Class AAA in the state.
In the boys' varsity game, the Landsharks jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the opening quarter behind six points from senior guard
Drew Swyt, who hit a three-pointer and three free throws in the period.
OCA continued to push its lead in the second quarter, again holding Battery Creek to just six points as the Landsharks took a 34-12 lead into the break. Battery Creek tried to stay close after intermission, but the Landsharks pushed their advantage to 50-23. The Landsharks got a trio of three-pointers – one each from
Tyrek Dawson,
Gabriel Riesgo-Rivera and
Carson Jones – in the quarter.
The OCA defense held the Dolphins to just six points again in the final quarter to put the game away.
A total of 10 different players scored in the game for Oceanside, with Riesgo-Rivera leading the way with 12 points. Swyt and
Terence Johnson followed closely behind with 10 points each.
Like in the boys' game, the Oceanside girls got off to a hot start, taking a 14-7 lead in the opening quarter and then pushing the advantage to 32-12 by halftime. The Landsharks filled the basket from inside the arc with senior forward
Teagan Scott scoring 10 points and junior guard Henley Hawks adding eight in the first half.
The Landsharks put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the Dolphins 24-5 to take a 56-17 lead into the final period. Scott scored nine more of her game-high 21 points in the third quarter while fellow senior co-captain
Ella Mae Schepp scored seven of her 13.
Oceanside finished the game off in the final quarter with a pair of three-pointers from freshman
Louisa Moore.
The Landsharks will be home on Saturday, Feb. 1, to host North Charleston with the JV boys set for a 3 p.m. start. The varsity girls will play at 4:30 and the varsity boys will tip at 6 p.m. The games were originally set for last Friday, Jan. 24, but were postponed because of the snow. Oceanside will then play host to Orangeburg-Wilkinson on Tuesday night, Feb. 4.
