Hanahan, SC – Another night of high school basketball and another step toward the SCHSL playoffs for the Oceanside Collegiate Academy Landsharks.
Both OCA varsity teams took that step on Friday night with road victories over Hanahan High in Region 6-AAA play. The OCA girls improved to 17-5 on the year with a 38-26 victory, handing the Hawks (14-6, 5-1) their first loss in region play. The two teams are now tied at the top of the region with one week, and another showdown, left to play.
The Landsharks boys team won their 15
th consecutive game and improved to 19-1 overall on the year with a dominant 73-25 victory over Hanahan. OCA is a perfect 6-0 in region play with two games to play and have secured at least a share of the region championship. Hanahan fell to 4-17 overall, including an 0-6 mark in region play, with the loss.
The OCA junior varsity boys team fell to Hanahan by a score of 38-29 in overtime. The JV now has a record of 2-12 on the season.
All three teams will be back in action on Tuesday night when they go on the road to play at North Charleston. The Landsharks will close the regular season at home on Friday night when they host Hanahan in games originally scheduled for January 21, but were postponed due to the winter weather that week.
The Oceanside girls, current ranked fourth in the state in class AAA by MaxPreps, struggled to get their offensive attack going against the Hawks, but relied on their tremendous defensive play to take the victory.
"We gritted out this win on the road," coach
Mandy Harrison said. "We got solid performances from
Ella Mae Schepp,
Josie Hanks and
Ella Hunter, who knocked down some big shots when we needed it."
The game was tied at nine at the end of the opening quarter, but the Landsharks were able to get some offense going in the second period. Hunter hit a pair of three pointers in the opening half while Hanks and Schepp added six points each.
The Landsharks turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, holding Hanahan to just eight points over the final 16 minutes, including just three in the fourth quarter. Schepp hit a pair of threes in the third quarter to help OCA push its advantage to 35-23. Hanks scored the only points of the final period for OCA with a basket and a free throw.
Schepp finished with 14 points to lead all scorers while Hunter added 10 and Hanks had nine. Sophomore Bri Johnson led Hanahan with 11 points.
Like in the girls' game, the OCA boys' varsity team got off to a little bit of a slow start but turned up the defensive pressure after the opening quarter and put the game away in the third by outscoring the Hawks 24-10.
Senior
Carson Jones turned out to be too much for the Hawks, scoring 18 points in the game on six made three-pointers. He wasn't the only OCA to give a strong outside shooting performance as junior
Abe Davinroy connected for a trio of threes while junior forward
Terence Johnson hit a pair of his own.
Johnson finished the game with 13 points while junior
Jake Thomas scored 10. The Hawks did not have a single player crack double-figure scoring in the game but did have three players finish with nine points.
The Landsharks enter the final week of the season as the No. 1 team in the state, both overall and in class AAA, according to MaxPreps.
Play at North Charleston on Tuesday is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with the JV boys' game. The varsity girls will follow at 6:30 p.m. with the varsity boys scheduled to finish the night with an 8 p.m. tip. Game times for Friday's home contests against Hanahan are schedule to be the same.
