Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy boys' and girls' varsity basketball teams got the month of February off on the right foot on Saturday night as both earned convincing victories over region foe North Charleston.
The Landsharks won the girls game 62-19 and then took the boys contest 78-43. The only blemish on the night was a loss by the boys' junior varsity squad 42-32.
The OCA girls (15-5, 3-1) dominated Cougars from the very start of the game and, in fact, outscored the visitors' total for the game in the very first quarter. The Hanks sisters, Kenley and Josie, carried much of the load early, scoring eight and seven points, respectively, in the opening quarter.
"It was a great team win, everyone contributed," OCA coach
Mandy Harrison said. "We had very balanced scoring, did a nice job of scoring in transition and taking care of the basketball. We had less than 10 turnovers in the game while recording 18 assists and 18 steals."
Henley Hanks finished the game with 15 points while Josie ended the night with 13. Senior captain
Ella Mae Schepp added in 11 points.
The Landsharks, currently ranked No. 4 in the state in class AAA, will be back in action tomorrow night when they host Orangeburg-Wilkinson for Senior Night. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
The Oceanside boys, currently ranked No. 1 in the state in class AAA and No. 2 in the state overall, improved to 17-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in region play with their victory over the Cougars.
The Landsharks got off to a little bit of a slow start offensively, leading the Cougars (12-9, 2-3) by a score of 17-10 at the end of the opening quarter and 32-18 at halftime. That slower start didn't carry over to the second half as Oceanside poured in 46 points while holding North Charleston to just 25.
OCA had a trio of players finish the game in double figures with junior
Jake Thomas leading the way, scoring 17 points. Junior
Abe Davinroy and senior
Drew Swyt followed closely behind Thomas, scoring 16 points each. North Charleston was led by senior guard Richard Hazel III with 18 points.
Like the girls, the boys will recognize their seniors on Tuesday night when they host Orangeburg-Wilkinson. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
