Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy Landsharks posted their 14
th consecutive victory on Tuesday night, defeating Orangeburg-Wilkinson High 56-42 to close in on the Region 6-AAA title.
The top ranked Landsharks improved to 18-1 overall on the year and have a 5-0 mark in region play with three games to play. Oceanside owns the tiebreaker over the second place Bruins (17-6, 5-2).
In addition to the varsity boys winning, the Oceanside girls' team avenged their only loss in region play with a decisive 51-19 victory over Orangeburg-Wilkinson. The Landsharks, who are ranked No. 4 in the state in class AAA, improved to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in region play. OCA is a half-game behind Hanahan in the region race with two games remaining against the Hawks. The Bruins are third in the race with a 14-6 overall record, including a 5-2 region mark.
The Oceanside boys' team, which was without head coach Quintin Hollis for much of the game, jumped out to a seven-point lead, 15-8, in the opening quarter on Tuesday behind senior
Carson Jones and juniors
Jake Thomas and
Terence Johnson. Thomas scored the first basket of the game and Jones followed with a three-pointer. Freshman guard Brenden Peoples kept the Bruins close by scoring all five of his points for the night in the opening minutes.
The Landsharks were able to push their advantage to 10 points by halftime with Johnson adding two more baskets to go along with five points from junior
Abe Davinroy. With a 28-18 lead entering the second half, senior
Drew Swyt came out hot to start the second half, scoring eight of the first nine points for the Sharks as the Oceanside lead grew to 47-28.
Oceanside managed to score just nine points in the final quarter, thanks to hitting just 3-of-10 free throws, but the Bruins were only able to make up five points.
Thomas and Swyt shared game-high scoring honors with 11 points each. Of the seven players who saw action in the game for OCA, six finished with four rebounds. Junior Jordan McGahee and senior Keith Smith led OWHS with 10 points apiece while both also grabbed six rebounds.
In the girls' game, the Landsharks got off to a slow start, scoring just two baskets in the opening quarter, but then outscored the Bruins 21-0 in the second period to build an insurmountable lead.
Ella Hunter and
Ella Mae Schepp both hit three-pointers in the quarter and finished the game with 14 points each to lead Oceanside.
Josie Hanks (11) and
Teagan Scott (10) both also scored in double figures for Oceanside.
The Oceanside junior varsity boys lost their game 51-17 to start the night.
The Landsharks will be back in action on Friday, on the road at Hanahan in the first of two dates with the Hawks in the final week of the regular season. The teams will meet to close the year on Thursday, February 13, at the OCA Gym in a makeup date from January 21.
