Hanahan, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy volleyball team completed an undefeated run through Region 6AAA on Thursday night, downing Hanahan in straight sets to clinch the region title.
The Landsharks (12-3) sailed through their eight region matches without losing a single set.
Getting that final victory, however, was far from easy as the host Hawks put up quite a battle early on. OCA took the opening set 25-22 before taking command of the match with a 25-10 victory in the second set. The Landsharks finished off the game with a 25-20 victory in the third and final set.
"We knew this would be a tough game because of the implications on the region standings," OCA coach
Jennifer Fort said. "I am proud of this team for digging deep and finishing strong."
Senior setter
Lexi Duplessis set the tone for the Landsharks by recording nine kills and 16 assists to go along with four service aces and two blocks. Junior outside hitter
Brianna Bowman also had nine kills to go with three aces and a block.
The Landsharks will now have to play the waiting game to find out who they will face in the opening round of the SCHSL state playoffs. Oceanside will host an opening round match on October 31 against the No. 5 team from Region 4 which includes Fox Creek High, Keenan High, Newberry High, Silver Bluff High and Swansea High.
"We have worked so hard this season to get ready for the playoffs and I am excited to see how all of the hard work pays off," Fort said.
Oceanside will have a chance to continue playing at home, as long as the Landsharks continue to win, until the state semifinals. The state championship will be played at Dreher High in Columbia on Saturday, November 16, at 2 p.m.
Junior Varsity Wins Pair of Matches to Close Season

In the victory over Phillip Simmons, Eden Abney was the standout performer for the Landsharks.
"Eden had her best game of the year, playing really well on the outside for us," coach

The standout on Thursday in the win over Hanahan was Caitlin Mordecai.
"It was the last game of the season, and we finished well," Koele said. "I love the way we came in focused to play our best volleyball to finish the year. Caitlin was a standout in the middle for us. She was very efficient."
