Columbia, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy girls' volleyball team fell just short of its goal for the 2024 season when the Landsharks fell to Powdersville High 3-0 in the SCHSL Class AAA title game at Dreher High.
The Landsharks finished the season as Lower State champions with a 16-4 record on the season. The powerful Powdersville squad finished with a record of 33-4.
"We knew we were the underdogs going into the match," Oceanside head coach
Jennifer Fort said. "We knew they would commit very few unforced errors so we prepared the best we could to face that.
"Our nerves were definitely a factor because we had so much youth in so many critical roles, players who had never faced that kind of pressure before. I don't want to take anything away from Powdersville because they were excellently coached and played a heck of a game. We just couldn't hang with them."
The Patriots jumped on top early in the match, taking the opening set 25-14. Oceanside kept pace better in the second set before falling 25-18 and the Landsharks continued to play hard to the finish, dropping the third set 25-21.
"Our defensive specialists and liberos were on fire during the match," Fort said. "They kept us in the game, especially seniors
Joamie Boscana and
Madi Harris."
Fort said she is excited to think about next season with so many players returning. The Landsharks will lose just five players, with
Addison Felton,
Sophia Skidmore and
Lexi Duplessis joining Boscana and Harris.
"I am so proud of this team for the growth we had from the start of the season until now," Fort said. "We had excellent senior leadership that will certainly be missed; but I see a hunger and fire inside the returners to come back stronger and fight harder because, sometimes, that is exactly what failure is supposed to insight."
