Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy girls' volleyball team captured its fourth Lower State championship, and first since 2020, with a 3-1 victory over Orangeburg-Wilkinson on Tuesday night at the OCA Gym.
The Landsharks took the first set 25-15 but dropped a nail-biter in the second set, 25-27. The third set also went down to the wire before Oceanside took a 25-23 victory. The fourth and final set was not as close, with Oceanside closing out the match 25-18.
The Landsharks (16-3) will now go after the big prize, the Class AAA state title. OCA will face off against Powdersville High from Greenville on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Dreher High Gym in Columbia. Powdersville has an impressive 32-4 record on the year after handing top-ranked Chapman only its second loss of the year in the Upper State championship, ending a 17-match win streak.
Powdersville is ranked second in SCHSL AAA while the Landsharks are ranked fourth.
Oceanside advanced to the title game by dropping OWHS, a region foe, for the third time this year. Junior
Brianna Bowman turned in another outstanding performance, recording 21 kills and three service aces. Junior
Athena Bold also played well, recording 14 kills in the match, while senior
Sophia Skidmore had 11 kills.
"I am so excited for this team to be able to celebrate a monumental win," OCA coach
Jennifer Fort said. "I am so excited for the seniors to have their last home game end in a victory."
Fort said her squad will have to refocus quickly to prepare for the challenge that awaits them on Saturday.
"We are going to be the underdogs on Saturday, so the support from the OCA community would be huge for us," Fort said. "There is no better support for any team that having fans there in person to cheer you on."
