Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Oceanside Collegiate Academy girls volleyball team posted a pair of runaway victories last week, but the Landsharks are expecting much tougher competition this week.
The Landsharks tool a pair of Region 6-AAA wins last week, improving to 6-0 in region play and 9-3 overall on the season, downing North Charleston 3-0 on Tuesday and Battery Creek 3-0 on Thursday.
OCA barely surrendered a point in the first two sets against North Charleston in the OCA gym, winning 25-3 and 25-2. The Landsharks closed out that match with a 25-11 victory in the third set.
Things were a little closer in Beaufort in the match against Battery Creek. The Landsharks opened with a 25-3 victory in the first set before taking sets two and three 25-12 and 25-15. The junior varsity, which did not play against North Charleston, won its match against Battery Creek 2-0 by scores of 25-4 and 25-11 to remain unbeaten (6-0) on the year.
Junior
Athena Bold and Lauren Hagmeyer were standouts for the OCA varsity in play last week.
The Landsharks will be back on the road tonight against sister school Atlantic Collegiate Academy in Conway. The Armada is 17-7-3 on the season with a pair of tournament victories on their resume. OCA coach
Jennifer Fort said she expects a much closer match than what they had on September 5, a 3-0 OCA victory.
"Atlantic has a very scrappy team and is extremely well coached," Fort said. "I am excited to see the work we have done in practice against an opponent like ACA."
After the non-region match against Atlantic, the Landsharks will close out their regular season home schedule on Thursday night against Orangebug-Wilkinson. It will be senior night for Oceanside.
"I hope everyone comes out to show these seniors their appreciation for the work they have done over the years," Fort said. "It should be a really good match."
Oceanside won the first meeting between the teams back on September 24 in straight sets, but each game was close. The Varsity match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start both tonight at Atlantic and Thursday vs. OWHS. The Landsharks' junior varsity team will be in action to start both nights at 5 p.m.
