For the second straight year, the Oceanside Collegiate boys basketball team will have an opportunity to win a Class AA state championship.
The Landsharks (22-6) defeated Hampton County, 62-46, on Saturday night to capture the Class AA Lower State championship. That win sets up a rematch of last year's AA finals against five-time state champion Gray Collegiate on Friday, March 1 at the Florence Civic Center at 4 p.m.
Gray Collegiate defeated Oceanside last year, and Landsharks head coach Quinton Hollis has been thinking of a rematch with Oceanside's sister charter school since that loss.
"I've been thinking about it since the horn went off last year," Hollis said. "I want this team to be the best and they (Gray) have been the best for the last five years. To be the best, you have to beat the best so we are looking forward to the matchup."
Junior post Max Moorman led a balanced scoring attack for the Landsharks with 12 points. Senior guard Travis Stickney and junior forward Terence Johnson each chipped in 10 points.
The Landsharks led throughout the contest, turning a 16-11 first quarter lead into a 35-25 halftime advantage. An 18-point third quarter seemed to put the game away as the Landsharks led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.
"I'm just so excited for my guys," Hollis said. "This has been a better team. Last year we had some marquee guys but this team has everything. We can go 12 deep. Our depth is very good."
Hollis said the key in preparing for a powerhouse like Gray Collegiate will be focus and attention to detail.
"Just keep the main thing, the main thing," he said. "Eliminate all distractions and keep the main thing, the main thing."
